How war changed three characters’ destinies

Three Houses and Three Hopes already offer many clues about Dagda’s relationship with Fódlan. Arrange the wars by Imperial Year:

YearConflict
721Dagda and Brigid invade Fódlan
728The Empire counterattacks Brigid
731The Empire’s overseas expedition to Dagda fails
1175Another allied invasion changes Shamir, Petra, and Constance’s lives

Connecting these wars with support conversations clarifies many relationships.

A Relic bracelet’s overseas origins

Start with Yuri and Constance’s paralogue. Rescue Duke Gerth from an attack to receive his Relic bracelet. It came from Dagda: after the 1175 campaign, the duke served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and received it as a token of friendship during peace negotiations.

For its earlier history, he suggests that someone may have fled overseas with Relics when Seiros pursued the Ten Elites and their forces. But Aubin’s Crest is not among the Ten Elites, leaving its materials and transmission mysterious.

The Three Hopes art book mentions Relics whose Crest Stones remain connected and functional despite being split in half. The bracelet is worn on the left hand, with what resembles half a Crest Stone over its back. Cai also has a round red object in his left hand. Could it be the other half? This is a prerelease theory. Its smooth surface and lack of a clear Crest Stone mark also leave visual differences.

Three early imperial wars

In Imperial Year 721, Dagda and Brigid invade western Fódlan together. The Empire repels them after suffering losses. Seven years later, in 728, it defeats Brigid and brings the islands under its control. Three years after that, it attempts Dagda, only to suffer a disastrous defeat.

The islands’ position and expedition support

Brigid lies between two stronger continents, its allegiance often shifting with pressure and victory. Conquering the islands does not guarantee a reliable rear base for an expedition.

Three Hopes’ expedition record describes the disaster. Landing troops find none of the expected settlements, suffer a sudden attack, and are lured into forest. Ships collide in confusion, the sea catches fire, and retreat routes close. The Empire expected earlier fighting to have depleted enemy forces but meets far stronger resistance. Brigid switches sides again, and the expedition can only flee back to the coast.

Another allied invasion and imperial infighting

In 1175, Dagda and Brigid again attack the Empire’s western edge, ultimately targeting Enbarr. Shamir fights as a Dagdan mercenary, while Petra’s father leads Brigid. Petra explains that joining was her father’s own decision, so she does not blame Dagda for the entire war.

Constance’s House Nuvelle is among the first struck on the coast. Known for magic, the family has already lost its political backing when war arrives.

Four years earlier, the Insurrection of the Seven saw the emperor lose his struggle against the great nobles. House Nuvelle supported him and was excluded from power too. As enemies reached the coast, it lacked sufficient aid and suffered devastation to its territory and family. Afterward, the house was dissolved and its lands transferred to House Gerth. Both foreign invasion and internal division caused its downfall.

The count who reversed the offensive

Nearby Houses Gerth and Ochs are also drawn into the war, with Ochs losing its head. The force that finally stops the allies is led by Count Bergliez, the imperial Minister of Military Affairs and Caspar’s father.

Shamir recalls the allies being near victory before the count turned the battle. He combined personal strength with command ability and held the offensive. The allies retreated, Petra’s father died, and Shamir lost her partner. Imperial victory ended the war, but survivors continued bearing its losses.

Three lives after the war

Shamir was left in Fódlan and eventually reached the underground beneath Garreg Mach. After clashing with Church personnel, she received Rhea’s help and joined the Knights of Seiros. She remembers the debt without becoming devout. Gratitude and her mercenary position remain separate.

Petra was only 11 when her father died. Her grandfather held the throne, while she came to the Empire nominally as a guest but effectively a hostage. Language barriers and noble contempt made life difficult. Duke Gerth and Edelgard helped her, leaving complex feelings toward the Empire alongside gratitude toward individuals. Her conflict concerning Caspar, the son of her father’s killer, is especially clear in their supports.

Losing her family left Constance deeply traumatized, yet she still seeks its restoration. Instead of directing resentment at Petra, she studied at the School of Sorcery before reaching the Officers Academy. Her two sharply different personalities sit within this continuous life story.

Earlier clues about southern climate and exchanged techniques

Shamir says southern Dagda is hotter than Ailell. Petra discusses Brigid adopting Dagdan weapons and techniques. The two fought wars but also maintained exchanges.

These clues invite further questions: how did Relics first cross the sea, how do different regions live, and what is the other continent like? Before release, the most exciting prospect was entering places previously known only through support conversations.
