Which protagonist first? Learn the world with Cai before revenge and royal politics
For story information, try Cai, Leda, Dietrich, then Theodora. Once the obelisk opens, you can also alternate routes.

Learn the world through Cai’s opening
Cai’s young-hero rescue story offers the gentlest introduction. Its grounded opening introduces information important to other routes too. Returning after several more intense stories may instead make his opening feel slow.
I would play Cai,
Leda,
Dietrich, then
Theodora, entering the world with a lighter information load before tackling denser backgrounds.
Leda’s revenge story
Leda also starts closer to an ordinary person’s circumstances, less powerful than the other two. But her goal is clear from the first introduction: revenge.
Cai is a boy with a humble beginning, while Leda’s story grows more intense. If that atmosphere appeals, start with her directly.

Dietrich and royal backgrounds
Dietrich is unfamiliar with the continent, much like a first-time player, making shared discovery natural. After playing him, I still consider him a good starting choice, though his route creates more combat pressure on Hard.
Theodora’s opening presents considerable background at once. Learning the world first makes her kingdom and relationships easier to absorb, so I prefer saving her for later.

Keep progress when switching routes at obelisks
About one and a half to two hours into the opening, you meet the Pale Raven. The obelisk hall then lets you switch protagonists while retaining progress on every route.
If another protagonist interests you, switch and look. Alternating progress works too. Whoever you start with, you can later view the world through other eyes.
