Payment starts cooperation, while books, tea, and writing tools answer each companion’s interests. These relationships move from transactions toward mutual understanding, and battlefield teamwork puts that trust into practice.
How desires create business opportunities
“I like hearing people's desires.”
Talimun asks
Simon about his past, wanting to know not just where he came from but why he kept working as a mercenary. For a merchant, understanding what someone truly wants reveals how to approach them and how they might cooperate later.
With
Dietrich, he opens by declaring his postwar ambitions. He wants standing in Dagda and connections across the continent, using Dietrich to reach Fódlan's rulers. Yet the conversation eventually arrives at “because we are alike.” Mutual benefit starts the discussion, but interest and appreciation take the relationship farther.
Blending tea to offer a brief rest
The blended tea tastes familiar but differs from the old version. Its purpose goes beyond identifying ingredients: the maker wants the drinker to forget the strain of work and daily life for a while. Even a brief rest makes it worthwhile. The thanks after drinking are for more than the tea itself.
Books and languages broaden an adventurer's world
Tialla loves reading, so
Talimun begins with his book collection. Adventurers need curiosity, and language acts as a key. The world you know is only a small part of what exists; understanding another language opens places previously inaccessible. Books, journeys, and knowledge become connected.
The attraction of payment and gold
Lilian asks how much she will earn before hearing the full job. The other person approves of that caution: establishing payment beforehand helps avoid being taken advantage of. Small sums no longer excite her. She wants greater wealth, along with the feel and gleam of gold coins in her hands. Money is both an employment condition and an openly stated desire.
Writing tools make a gift suited to the recipient
Publishing profits rise, but
Dante did not help simply to earn more money. The return gift becomes writing tools: durable pen materials and supplies for creative work, chosen to address what he actually cares about. He denies that tools can govern his writing, yet later returns excitedly to discuss their effects. This exchange reaches his interests more directly than cash.
Wartime support differs from peacetime governance
During an external war, a shared enemy can unite domestic support. Maintaining stability afterward is a different problem. Winning the immediate battle does not end the challenges of governing. Both recognize that difficulty, giving them a reason to continue talking.
Battlefield coordination and trust between companions
Pressure from one fighter creates an opening for another. A simple thanks afterward moves them beyond ordinary coworkers. They still trade jabs, but planning another joint fight includes telling each other not to die. Trust appears in knowing how the other will act, rather than suddenly becoming polite.
Mikaela's conversation also makes cooperation concrete. Her broad movements reveal what comes next. Even without much liking for the other person, she agrees to coordinate and try again. Other conversations put revenge into dance, with a companion playing an imagined enemy. Shared performance gives difficult emotions a way out.
