Use high Strength for reliable single hits. Brigand into Warrior is straightforward; choose Sniper separately for ranged kills. A chance to survive lethal damage does not make him a main tank.

Simon: sword classes for Speed and The Eternal promotion

Simon should start with sword classes to improve Speed: train Sword in Gladiator, then take Myrmidon, Shido, and Swordmaster, followed by The Eternal at the Divine stage. His HP, Strength, and Luck growths are high, but Speed is only 35%. Light swords and class Speed modifiers help address that weakness. Close Call is a final chance to survive, not a replacement for normal damage calculations.

Sword classes improve the Speed he needs most

His starting class, Gladiator, can train Sword directly without a detour through magic. Sword, Axe, and Infantry are strengths; White Magic is a weakness. Beginner Gladiator is recommended at level 5 and Renown 1; intermediate Myrmidon at level 20, Renown 4, and Sword C; advanced Shido at level 35, Renown 8, and Sword B; master Swordmaster at level 45 and Sword A. These milestones break training into stages. Prepare current class progress, proficiency, and mastery separately.

Myrmidon's Sword Crit +3, Shido's Sword Crit +5, and Swordmaster's Sword Crit +7 steadily improve his chance of a sword critical. Myrmidon mastery grants DexRavaging Arts for more critical damage. Shido mastery grants Ever Vigilant, healing him after a critical kill. Swordmaster mastery grants Astra, which attacks five times at 50% damage per hit. Master each class before putting its mastery reward into a build.

Swordmaster's Speed growth modifier of +20 offsets his base 35% Speed growth. In the Promised One's story, Cleansing Blade can disable enemy Underworld Boons, another important reason to keep using swords. The class unlocks in the third segment of the Promised One's story; keep fighting as Shido until then.

The recommended Divine class is The Eternal, requiring S in any one of Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet. The sword route can therefore continue through Sword S. Axe Hit +10 and Brawl Hit +10 on the Divine class do not mean you must master all three weapon proficiencies. The class provides three additional combat art slots, and mastery skill Divine Might grants Strength +10. The exam also requires the class unlock and Scales of Judgement. Divine promotion is not an automatic switch at level 45.

Animal capture on Cai's route
Animal capture on Cai's route

Use a Bau to boost axe damage on Cai's route

On Cai's route, another option is advanced Dragoon riding a Wild Bau. Dragoon unlocks on Cai's route. At bond level 5, a Bau grants Strength +2 and Dexterity +2, plus 10 percentage points each to Strength and Dexterity growth, fitting his Axe strength. This branch emphasizes Strength, accuracy, and flying utility, whereas the sword route prioritizes Speed.

Animal capture becomes available in Chapter 5 of Cai's route, and total growth bonuses at bond level 5 add up to 25 percentage points. If you lack a rare individual, a wild animal of the same species has the same total growth bonus, so you can start raising it. The flying branch stays in Dragoon for further training.

Luck gradually improves his survival chance

Close Call requires at least 2 HP. When damage would reduce his HP to 0, it has a Luck% chance to leave him at 1 HP. It has both an HP requirement and a chance check. At 1 HP he no longer meets that requirement, so do not send a wounded Simon into combat assuming he can survive once more.

His level skill Devil's Luck+ grants Luck +2 after a kill, up to +10 on one map. Securing kills first improves Luck and thus his personal skill's activation rate. He does not start at full stacks, and the bonus is not permanent. The link between these abilities is to build Luck through kills, then improve his survival chance.

His personal growths are HP 50%, Strength 50%, Magic 20%, Speed 35%, Dexterity 40%, Defense 40%, Resistance 25%, Luck 50%, and Charm 35%, totaling 345. Three 50% growths in HP, Strength, and Luck provide a foundation for damage, physical bulk, and Dodge. Low Speed creates a risk of enemy follow-ups, while low Resistance limits magical engagements. Even with sword classes improving Speed, he may still fail to kill a target in one combat in the Promised One's story. His overall rating is A; calculate incoming damage without his survival effect activating.

Arena training

At level forty, check Speed as well as Strength and Luck

Near the end of Part 1, around level 40, Strength, HP, Luck, and Speed above their expected values are ideal. Strength secures kills, HP provides a margin for error, Luck directly affects his personal skill, and Speed is the key weakness his class must improve. High Luck does not remove the risk to your team if you keep letting him take repeated follow-ups.

Below-average Magic, Resistance, or Charm does not justify scrapping this physical training plan. Magic and Charm are not his main tools; handle his 25% Resistance growth by avoiding combat with mages. Normal expected Dexterity and Defense are enough. Every stat need not exceed the example. If Strength grows poorly, Merge Causality with Simon trained on another route takes the higher value in each stat, letting another record make up the difference.

Choose among seven arts for each target

Threaten gives adjacent enemies Crit -5. Close Quarters+ reduces adjacent enemies' Movement by 2 only while he is infantry. Avoid Fatality is also infantry-only and grants Dodge +10. Do not keep counting infantry-only bonuses after switching to Dragoon. His personal skill does not occupy one of the five equipped skill slots; level skills follow their equipment requirements.

Combat artEffects and costs on the original page
Wrath Strike2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10, useful when accuracy comes first.
Destreza3 durability; Might +3; adds Attack +5 and Crit +10 if the enemy has no more than half HP.

Spike2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10, improving axe accuracy.
Enrage4 durability; Strength +1 after combat, up to +5 on this map; build stacks to improve later damage.
Battleblade Strike5 durability; Might +7, Dexterity +2 after combat, up to +10 on this map.
Mighty Fist2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10; requires a class that can use gauntlets.

Learn these seven arts individually; he does not know all of them on joining. Check half-HP thresholds, kills, infantry status, weapon permissions, and durability costs for the current battle.

Pay five hundred and choose tails

You can recruit him on all four routes, each requiring Bond Level 3. He appears in Chapter 5 on Cai's route at Renown 8; Chapter 4 on Dietrich's at Renown 7; Chapter 5 on Theodora's at Renown 7; and Chapter 4 on Leda's at Renown 6. The negotiation is easy: pay 500 gold, then answer “Tails” at the coin toss to recruit him.

Choosing “Heads” lets you try again, but costs another 500 gold each time. Once you have the required bond and Renown, choosing correctly saves repeat payments. His in-combat Luck stat does not need to change the negotiation result.

Fishing gear and hometown food build bonds

He likes life-or-death contests, hometown cooking, and pursuing women. His liked gifts are Huge Fish Eyeball, Sharp Fishhook, Crimson Ghosh, Dual Fish Knives, and Protection Figurine. He also somewhat likes Saraminian Sweets, Light Shosh, Common Coffee, Rustic Ghosh, and Garum.

His support partners are the Promised One, Theodora, Mikaela, Lilian, Talimun, Ursula, Ninae, Ludia, Fianna, and Zarcone. His Japanese voice actor is Chikahiro Kobayashi, whose representative roles include Saichi Sugimoto in Golden Kamuy, Legoshi in BEASTARS, and Ranga in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

Finish one damage route first

Follow Brigand → Warrior, using Simon’s high Strength for reliable single hits. Choose Sniper if you need range. Do not use chance-based survival as your main tank.

Improve Hit for damage; do not gamble on survival. The damage route comes together after its Advanced class and Hit needs are ready. Stacking Luck still cannot guarantee the survival effect.

Training route by stage

Continue from his current level and class.

Part 1: choose melee or single-hit bows

Continue his current physical class rather than restarting a level 7 template. Brigand requires level 20, Renown 4, and Axe or Sword C, using this stage to build Strength. For melee, keep training Axe or Sword to B. For ranged offense, allocate training to Bow B early instead of starting from zero at level 35.

Swords can also add Luck. Use them to chip enemies and improve chance-based skill activation. Mastering Myrmidon and then training Shido requires additional class experience; changing class alone does not grant mastery.

Choose equipment for both Hit and single-hit damage first.

Part 2: move into Warrior or Sniper

Melee Warrior or single-shot Sniper
Melee Warrior

Take the Warrior exam at level 35, Renown 8, and Axe, Gauntlet, or Sword B. Continue the melee weapon already trained to limit investment. Practiced Art mastery adds 10 combat-art Hit, helping solve missed attacks first.

Ranged Sniper

Take the Sniper exam at level 35, Renown 8, and Bow B. Use high Strength for single shots against fragile enemies and fliers. The cost is separate Bow training. Master Marksmanship for Hit +15 while wielding a bow, then assess reliability. This route does not require forcing low Speed into follow-ups.

Develop Sniper first on the bow route.

Close Call leaves 1 HP on a Luck-based chance when taking lethal damage with at least 2 HP. Bond Level 3, Renown 7, and negotiation requirements appear separately on the right. Chance-based survival is not reliable tanking.
Close Call leaves 1 HP on a Luck-based chance when taking lethal damage with at least 2 HP. Bond Level 3, Renown 7, and negotiation requirements appear separately on the right. Chance-based survival is not reliable tanking.

Part 3: Luck is only extra insurance

On the melee route, level 45, the relevant weapon at A, and clearing Part 3 Section 1 allow Battlemaster. The bow route can stay in Sniper rather than rebuilding unused weapon training just to move up a tier.

After the level 35 upgrade, each kill adds 2 Luck, up to 10 for the map; five kills reach the cap. Close Call also needs at least 2 HP. When taking lethal damage, it activates at a percentage chance equal to Luck. Even 50 Luck means only 50%. After it leaves him at 1 HP, the next hit cannot use the same conditions again.

Try Talimun’s allied Luck +5 alongside ongoing healing and follow-up prevention to improve activation chances. Still calculate incoming damage assuming survival fails. Do not permanently reserve blessing, mount, or battalion resources for it.

Compare current routes in the simulator.

Plan finishing blows and ranged shots without a survival activation

Attack targets he can finish with normal damage or chip for allies. The bow route prioritizes ranged attacks on fragile enemies and fliers. Before melee, check enemy follow-ups and spells; high Strength does not remove durability weaknesses.

Each turn, first confirm he survives even if Close Call fails, then arrange attacks. Kill-based Luck is a map-only benefit: he starts without full stacks, and changing maps resets them. Take suitable kills without turning the entire team's offensive rhythm into a survival gamble.

Recruitment

All four Part 1 routes can recruit him, but all require Bond Level 3 and relatively high Renown. Joining time changes the training window, so continue from his recruitment level. See Simon’s recruitment details.

Close Call cannot save him again at 1 HP

  • Expecting another survival activation at 1 HP. The skill requires at least 2 HP. Heal after activation and avoid consecutive hits or later focused attacks.
  • Assuming maximum Luck stacks prevent death. The +10 cap is map-only Luck, not a 100% survival chance or permanent growth.
  • Training many subjects to chase follow-ups. Finish one melee or single-shot bow job first, then weigh each extra skill and final class separately.
  • Reading class levels one tier too early. Brigand starts at 20, Warrior and Sniper at 35, and Battlemaster at 45. Renown and unlocks still apply.
