Attack orderMinor spoilers

The normal order is attack → counterattack → follow-up. Murderous Intent only gives Dietrich Crit +5 when he initiates. Bertrand’s Sen No Sen and Go No Sen have a 25% activation chance; combat arts such as Flying Spear and Battle Rush reliably change the order.

Ordinary follow-ups come after the counterattack

An ordinary follow-up comes after the counterattack and requires at least 4 more Attack Speed. To follow up earlier, use an art such as Flying Spear instead of relying on a chance skill to survive.

  1. Normal combat order is: initiator attacks → opponent counters → the side with at least 4 more Attack Speed follows up. Even very high Attack Speed leaves the follow-up after the counter. Dying to the counter before following up is one of the most common failures.
  2. Murderous Intent does not change the order. It is Dietrich's personal ability, giving Critical +5 when he initiates. Murderous Intent+ gives Critical +10 only during Overblaze.
  3. Sen No Sen and Go No Sen are exclusive abilities Bertrand learns by leveling, each with only a 25% chance. Sen No Sen moves his follow-up before the counter when he initiates; Go No Sen lets him strike first when attacked during the enemy phase. Combat Arts such as Flying Spear and Battle Rush can change the order every time.
The bottom combat forecast lists our opening attack, the enemy counter, and the enemy follow-up in order. Each row shows damage and Hit, with a red cross marking the predicted defeat.

Only Bertrand can learn Sen No Sen and Go No Sen; they cannot be passed to others through secret teachings.

Using Murderous Intent. Dietrich can reach 100% Crit by stacking his personal skill Murderous Intent, high Dexterity, a class skill’s Crit +5, Hunter’s Ring +3, the Deadly Blade combat art’s Crit +15, and Crit bonuses from three teammates with level 5 support. Murderous Intent itself contributes only 5 points. What matters is its initiation condition: Dietrich should attack on player phase, rather than wait for enemies to come to him.

All three companions at the upper left have Bond Level 5. The first attack at the bottom has 100% Critical and the later hit 85%, showing the forecast for an initiating setup.

Moving follow-ups forward and preventing attacks

Ways to follow up before the counter
Flying Spear or Battle Rush
  • Flying Spear (spear art, durability cost 7) lets you follow up before the enemy counter. Prioritize upgrading it; the upgrade adds Critical +5 on the follow-up.
  • Battle Rush (gauntlet art, durability cost 7) also allows a follow-up before the counter.
Lightning Reflexes mastery ability

Mastery of Celestial Trooper. Requires initiating with at least 10 more Attack Speed than the enemy to move the follow-up before their counter.

Bertrand's exclusive Sen No Sen

Exclusive to Bertrand with a 25% chance. Calculate damage without the trigger and do not stake his life on it. :::

Follow-ups regardless of Attack Speed / denying enemy follow-ups

  • Hidden Flowform (sword, a Secret Teaching from the Berserker in Dietrich’s story): Avoid +20 and a guaranteed follow-up regardless of Attack Speed, but your damage is halved for this combat.
  • Reflecting Dance (axe, durability cost 10, learned by Esmeralda): if the enemy can follow up against you, it prevents their follow-up and gives you one instead. Worth upgrading when using Esmeralda.
  • Fierce Spear (Orichaldia mastery art): prevents enemy follow-ups for this combat.
  • Follow-up Orb (accessory, weight 5): a 5% chance to follow up regardless of Attack Speed. Suits units that are already slow.
  • Requiem Style (Bertrand’s personal skill): a 5% chance to follow up regardless of Attack Speed.

Avoiding counters / striking first

  • Windsweep (sword, durability cost 10) has a 20% chance to prevent a counter after hitting; Windweave has a 10% chance. Careful Attack halves damage but prevents a counter if the attack misses.
  • Ready for Battle (Seteth’s personal skill): a 50% chance to strike first in the first combat on enemy phase.
  • Hunter’s Snare (Peppe’s personal skill): a 30% chance to strike first on enemy phase if the enemy is already injured.
  • Blindside (Leda’s personal skill): a 5% chance to prevent a counter when initiating.
  • Go No Sen: exclusive to Bertrand, 25% chance.

Plan attack-order changes as part of the full training route. Eshmel can train Sword and Flying for the required qualifications and masteries, then become a Celestial Trooper. High Speed and Lightning Reflexes let his initiating follow-up happen before the counter. Add ranged healing and Canto so the flying unit can adjust support positions afterward. This flying support route requires substantial investment. Lightning Reflexes only works when he initiates with at least 10 more Attack Speed. Otherwise, calculate normal combat order and prepare healing and an escape.

Bertrand’s exclusive skills and Murderous Intent’s initiation condition
Note
  • “Sen No Sen and Go No Sen can be taught or passed on through Secret Teachings”: they cannot. These level-up skills are exclusive to Bertrand.
  • “Murderous Intent is Dietrich’s Overblaze effect”: ordinary Murderous Intent works at any time, provided he initiates. Only Murderous Intent+ requires Overblaze.
  • “Enough Attack Speed lets you follow up before a counter”: it does not. You need one of the combat arts or skills listed above.
