After joining in Part 3, improve weapon ranks and use Blaze self-buffs in melee. Axes and fists into Battlemaster are straightforward; light swords for doubles are an alternative.

Bertrand’s awakening buffs and axe-and-fist progression

Bertrand works well continuing from his starting Warrior into Battlemaster, then The Eternal. Use four Awakening arts to strengthen him before sword, axe, or brawling attacks. Resistance and late recruitment are his weaknesses; treat the 5% follow-up chance as a bonus.

Keep training axes and fists after recruitment

He joins in Part 3 already in an Advanced class, so there is no need to retrace Beginner and Specialty routes. Warrior permits his strengths in swords, axes, and gauntlets, with Practiced Art as its mastery reward. The recommended Master class is Battlemaster, with a recommended exam level of 45. Prepare for its exam once any one of Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet reaches A. It permits all three weapons, grants axe Hit and gauntlet Hit +7 each, and its mastery art multiplies damage dealt by 1.5, directly amplifying his Strength advantage.

Battlemaster also makes sense for its timing: it unlocks earlier than Swordmaster, which requires a later temple quest. Continuing his existing strengths avoids extensive catch-up training in the Promised One’s story and leads into The Eternal. Its Divine exam likewise accepts Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet, with any one at S. Axe and gauntlet Hit bonuses rise to +10, and mastery grants Divine Might. Transition according to class unlocks, proficiency, and certification items. Level 60 is not an unlock requirement.

Check Strength and HP growth first

Focus growth comparisons on Strength, Dexterity, Speed, and HP. Strength 55% supports axe damage and high-multiplier arts; Dexterity 50% supports accuracy and criticals; Speed 45% makes regular follow-ups and evasion more reliable. HP matters too: each Awakening costs 6 HP, and the Underworld type loses maximum HP on Burst. Extra HP gives more room to buff and take damage.

Magic 15% does not support this physical route, and Charm is not its offensive focus. Low Luck does not immediately mean a ruined build. Normal expected growth from Defense 45% is sufficient. Resistance is only 20%, a clear weakness. Wisdom Awakening increases Resilience under magical pressure, but still keep him out of enemy mage range afterward rather than making him tank magic for long.

Switch among four awakenings for the enemy

Sovereign Awakening adds 50 Hit, Flash Awakening adds 10 Protection, Wisdom Awakening adds 10 Resilience, and Storm Awakening adds 30 Avoid. Each costs 6 HP, lasts until the next player phase, and permits attacking afterward. Add Hit before fighting evasive enemies. If remaining in enemy range, choose physical defense, magical defense, or Avoid as needed. These buffs are activated deliberately rather than relying on a follow-up proc.

The Underworld type builds Blaze Gauge through combat with a Curse Orb equipped and loses maximum HP on Burst. Blaze Control raises the gauge to 6; after entering Overblaze, Burst does not end it. The Origin ability also adds Strength +5. These abilities give him strong immediate combat value in the Promised One's story, but leave enough HP. Requiem Style has only a 5% chance to follow up regardless of Attack Speed. Keep training Speed and plan kills without the proc.

His balanced offensive and defensive growths, plus awakenings that preserve his attack action, are this build’s strengths. His rating is held back mainly by joining in Part 3, missing the long-term training and battle opportunities of Parts 1 and 2.

Complete his paralogue in Part 1

Recruitment requires completing Bertrand's paralogue in Part 1; he then joins through the story during Segment 1 of Part 3. Missing the paralogue cannot be repaired by Support, gifts, or paid negotiations in Part 3. Complete it in Part 1 if you want him, then continue the Warrior route in the Promised One's story.

Random initiative does not replace reliable arts

Go No Sen has a 25% chance to act first in enemy-phase combat. Sen No Sen has a 25% chance to follow up before the enemy counter when initiating. Treat both as extra opportunities. Attack Formation grants adjacent allies Attack +1, Distraction+ lowers adjacent enemies' Hit by 5, and Close Quarters lowers adjacent enemies' Movement by 1 only while he is infantry.

Available Combat ArtEffect and durability cost
Wrath Strike2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10.
Tiger Slash3 durability; Might +3, effective against cavalry.
Blaze Blow5 durability; Might +7, with a Strength /2% chance of another Attack +5.
Spike2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10.
Enrage4 durability; Strength +1 after combat, up to +5 for the battle.
Riot4 durability; Might +5, with another Attack +5 on follow-ups.
Mighty Fist2 durability; Might +4, Hit +10.
One-on-One3 durability, Hit −50; prevents enemy movement on hit.
Battle Rush7 durability, Might −2; follows up before the enemy counter.

Infantry-only abilities do not count while mounted.

Raise weapon proficiency after joining, then move into Battlemaster

After Bertrand joins permanently in Part 3, train his weapon ranks and take Warrior into Battlemaster. His strength is choosing Hit, Avoid, or durability buffs for the enemies ahead.

He has no low-level training window in Part 1. Once he has a suitable weapon and reliable accuracy, he can fight without waiting for a Divine class.

Bertrand as a Warrior: the upper left shows his current weapon, Attack 68, and Hit 122, alongside Protection 28 and Resilience 11. Check offense and defense separately before switching weapons or engaging.

Class progression by stage

Part 1: Complete the recruitment prerequisite

Complete the friendly match with the king of Brigid paralogue in Part 1 to recruit him permanently in Part 3. He cannot be recruited for long-term training at this point, so low-level Gladiator and Brigand routes do not apply. See recruitment for routes and paralogue windows.

Part 2: evaluate the guest version separately

Evaluate his Part 2 guest stats separately. In Part 3, calculate Attack Speed from his equipment and stats on permanent recruitment.

Part 3: Make him functional before changing to a master class

Continue from his Part 3 joining state
  1. 1
    Check his starting state.
Look at his actual level, Sword/Axe/Gauntlet ranks, and learned arts. A late-joining version may have enough Strength but lag in Speed and weapon ranks. Do not restart from a low-level database template or assume every mastery is learned.
  2. 2
Stay in Warrior and focus on Axe.
Aim for heavy single hits. First qualify for your regular weapon, then push Axe to A. Finish Warrior mastery and equip Practiced Art for Hit +10 with combat arts. Mastery requires class EXP; reaching level 45 alone does not grant it.
  3. 3
From level 45, switch to Battlemaster once eligible.
It requires A in Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet and completion of Part 3, segment 1. Follow an existing melee skill to avoid training a new branch. The mastery art War Master's Strike is a later goal, not something obtained immediately on reclassing.
  4. 4
    Choose a buff before attacking.
Add Hit when accuracy is low, choose physical or magical durability for the relevant enemy, or use Avoid to reduce risk. The strength is adapting to enemies, rather than counting every buff as permanent. Check Blaze Art costs and remaining HP.
Bertrand's Sovereign Awakening menu shows Hit +50, Attack +5, and a 6 HP cost. Check the effect before attacking (Simplified Chinese off-screen capture).
Bertrand's Sovereign Awakening menu shows Hit +50, Attack +5, and a 6 HP cost. Check the effect before attacking.

Weapons and support. Against Underworld Boon, bring a Cleansing Blade or his anti-dead art instead of relying only on ordinary axes. Warrior classes can use swords, so a Cleansing Blade does not require a sword-only final class. The infantry route needs no mount. Use available Battalions and Blessings.

Another option uses a light sword for follow-ups. Use a light sword for doubles or an axe for a single heavy hit, checking actual equipped Attack Speed first. With Sword A, level 45, and the relevant Mars temple unlock, you can choose Swordmaster. Check the quest unlock before preparing the exam. A sword endpoint can also continue from his joining state.

Get him fighting reliably as Warrior or Battlemaster first. The Eternal also needs an S-rank weapon and an available slot.

Switch swords and axes according to Attack Speed

Place him alongside the advancing main force and choose buffs and weapons for high-defense enemies, the risen dead, or mages. Add Hit if axes miss too often; switch to a light sword when it grants an extra attack. His Resistance is low, so even after a magic-defense buff, include enemy follow-ups and later concentrated attacks in damage calculations.

Calculate kills and survival without his personal skill's follow-up or first-strike effects triggering. A proc is a bonus; taking on an entire enemy group needs a separate damage calculation.

Proficiencies in this late-game Bertrand setup: Sword A+, Axe A+, and Gauntlet B+. His current swords and axes are listed above.

Recruitment details

Complete the above paralogue in Part 1. He joins through the story in Part 3's first section; the Part 2 guest appearance does not replace that requirement. See Bertrand's recruitment requirements for detailed windows.

Raise weapon proficiency first

  • He joins late. Fill gaps from his actual joining state; a level 5 training route does not apply.
  • Train weapons while reaching level 45, or you may lack A-rank exam eligibility.
  • Subtract buff costs first, then calculate damage from consecutive enemy attacks.
  • Keep a finisher ready for key targets in case chance-based first strikes or follow-ups fail.

The White-Haired Demon in the arena

Known for overwhelming strength in Dagsion's arena, Bertrand is called the White-Haired Demon. He keeps fighting to gain freedom.

The tragedy Leda questionsSpoilers

After defeating Bertrand, Leda questions him about her father's murder instead of killing him immediately. Bertrand admits killing her father in combat, saying the dying man asked him to protect his daughter. On returning to the royal capital, he was accused of regicide and later learned his closest friend had framed him. Leda suspects a shared enemy and spares him for now, but does not forgive him.

A helping hand in the War ArcSpoilers

Bertrand and Theodora's connection during the games continues into the War Arc. In Part II, he becomes an important ally of the queen.

After the war: Solo endingSpoilers

After the war, Bertrand focuses on domestic governance before advancing his grand plan once the kingdom stabilizes. It becomes key to a stable regional order. Though implementation is long and difficult, he consistently favors diplomacy over military force.
