Jester’s sword evasion build and mounted alternative

Jester works well as a fast sword user built for evasion: Gladiator → Myrmidon → Shido → Swordmaster → The Calamity. He can easily land follow-up attacks, but that does not guarantee a kill. Check his Strength as you train him, rather than focusing only on Speed. In Cai’s story, he can also become a Forest Knight and ride a Ferghanan Horse while continuing to use his preferred swords and bows.

Follow the sword line to The Calamity

Keep him as a Gladiator after he joins and focus on Sword. Sword, Bow, and Infantry are his strengths, while Axe is a weakness, so there is no need to spread his training thin to follow an axe build. The sword line can also use Cleansing Blade later on, giving him a way to attack enemies with Netherworld Blessing in the Promised One’s story.

StageClass and recommended entry levelWhat to obtain at this stage
BeginnerGladiator, recommended level 5, Renown 1D in Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet; master it for Attack Basics
IntermediateMyrmidon, recommended level 20, Renown 4Sword C; the class grants Sword Crit +3 and Combat Arts +1; master it for DexRavaging Arts
AdvancedShido, recommended level 35, Renown 8Sword B; Sword Crit +5 and Combat Arts +2; master it for Ever Vigilant
MasterSwordmaster, recommended level 45Sword A; Sword Crit +7 and Combat Arts +3; master it for Astra
DivineThe CalamitySword or Bow S; uses swords and bows and grants Locktouch and exploration abilities; master it for Divine Will

Swordmaster unlocks in the third section of the Promised One’s story. Keep fighting as a Shido until then. Training Sword to S also meets The Calamity’s proficiency requirement; you do not need to force Bow to S for the final class change. These levels are recommended milestones for this route. You must still meet each class’s unlock, exam, Renown, and proficiency requirements.

The mastery rewards on this route have specific conditions. Ravaging Arts increases critical damage, while Ever Vigilant restores HP only when you defeat an enemy with a critical hit. They improve the sword line’s burst damage and sustain, but you cannot count on those benefits without a critical hit or a kill.

A Ferghanan Horse offers another home for swords and bows

In Cai’s story, you can use Forest Knight for the advanced stage instead. It lets him keep using swords and bows on horseback. At friendship level 5, a Ferghanan Horse grants Strength +2, Defense +2, and another 10 percentage points of Defense growth, helping offset his low Strength and unreliable durability.

Animal capture unlocks in Chapter 5 of Cai's story. At maximum friendship, combined growth bonuses total 25 percentage points. If you cannot find a rare specimen right away, raise a wild specimen of the same species first; their total growth bonus is the same, so do not leave the mount slot empty while waiting for a rare horse. This branch can stay in Forest Knight for mounted sword-and-bow mobility; the pure sword route does not need it.

Check Strength and Speed around level 40

Around level 40 at the end of Part 1, his Speed, Dexterity, Strength, and Luck should exceed this route’s expected values to bring out his strengths as an evasive swordsman. His 60% personal Speed growth supports evasion and follow-up attacks; 45% Dexterity growth helps Hit and critical rate. Strength growth is only 35% and can easily limit his damage, while 40% Luck growth helps Dodge.

Magic and Charm do not play a major role in this build and can fall below expectations. Defense and Resistance are also lower priorities for this evasion route, and HP only needs to meet expectations. Evasion is never guaranteed, though, and low Resistance still makes magic dangerous. If his Speed falls behind, you can train another record of him in a different protagonist’s story, then use Merge Causality to take the higher value for each stat.

StatHPStrengthMagicSpeedDexterityDefenseResistanceLuckCharm
Personal growth rate40%35%15%60%45%35%25%40%40%

His overall rating is B. He has excellent Speed and can reach high-tier sword classes through his strong proficiencies. Blink of an Eye grants Defense +3 after using Swap until the next player phase. However, low Strength can leave him unable to kill even with two hits as early as Part 1, and his 25% Resistance growth limits his ability to take on mages. High Speed does not automatically mean high damage.

Once you meet the bond and Renown requirements, you still have three battle requests to complete. Return and report after each one to unlock the next. Defeating enemies at all three locations without reporting in order does not complete the negotiations.

Choose knives and a ceremonial spear as gifts

He likes Bertrand because he can provide a satisfying challenge. He also enjoys watching an opponent’s expression change with fear. His gifts fall into the following three preference tiers.

Flickering Edge boosts Attack only after an evade

Flickering Edge+ grants Attack +5 during a battle in which he successfully evades an attack. Its focus is the counterattack after an evade; an ordinary player-initiated attack does not receive an unconditional extra 5 Attack.

Three skills support an infantry build. Evasion has only a 3% activation chance when attacked and grants Avoid +100 when it triggers, so it cannot guarantee safe enemy-phase combat. Positioning grants Avoid +10 in combat while he occupies favorable terrain. Dodge grants Avoid +5 against bows and magic while he is infantry. Meet the class and terrain conditions first, then use the combat forecast to plan engagements.

His support conversation partners include Eshmel, Leda, Peter, Mikaela, Buccar, Dante, Noctula, Goliath, and Halvin.

Build up Strength before returning to swords

Recruit Jester early. If his damage falls short, use Brigand and Warrior to build Strength before returning to swords. Skip the detour if he already secures kills reliably.

Jester is fast, but even two hits can struggle to deal damage. His level 35 upgrade improves his damage bonus after a successful evasion, but he still needs enough Strength to finish enemies. Another option trains axes and bows before moving into Bow Knight, spreading your investment more widely.

Class progression by stage

Change classes once you meet the exam's level and proficiency requirements; you do not need to tie each change to a fixed chapter. If you recruit him late, continue from his current state instead of returning to level 7.

Part 1: recruit early and build Strength

Check damage before choosing Strength-building classes
  1. 1
Check his actual Strength and damage first.
His Strength growth is 35% and Speed growth is 60%, so the priority is making sure his high Speed translates into meaningful damage. If he already kills reliably, you do not need to complete an entire axe class path.
  2. 2
At level 20 and Renown 4, he can take the Brigand exam.
Either Sword or Axe C meets the requirement. On the main sword path, continuing Sword training meets the main threshold without forcing him to train his weak Axe proficiency just to build Strength. Gain his next few levels in a Strength-focused class, and decide how long to stay based on his actual damage.
  3. 3
Train Sword toward B ahead of time.
At level 35 and Renown 8, he can take the Warrior exam with any one of Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet at B. If he meets the requirements in Part 1, start building Strength then. Otherwise, carry that goal into Part 2. Do not treat “level 35” as a deadline for returning to a fast class.
Check his current Strength 33 and Speed 57 at the lower left, then Flickering Edge+ and his equipped abilities on the right. Fast follow-ups still need enough damage, and the evasion damage bonus must actually be equipped.
Check his current Strength 33 and Speed 57 at the lower left, then Flickering Edge+ and his equipped abilities on the right. Fast follow-ups still need enough damage, and the evasion damage bonus must actually be equipped.

Part 2: build enough damage to kill, then return to swords

Stay in Warrior if damage is still lacking; consider Shido once his Strength is sufficient. Shido also requires level 35, Renown 8, and Sword B. Check whether he has enough Strength to defeat current targets, then decide whether to remain in Warrior for growth or switch back to swords.

If you have already mastered Gladiator, equip Attack Basics. Warrior's mastery, Practiced Art, improves Combat Art accuracy. For a critical counterattack build, consider Myrmidon's Ravaging Arts and Shido's Ever Vigilant as optional additions. Ravaging Arts increases critical damage, while Ever Vigilant restores HP after a critical kill.

Start with an upgraded sword that deals enough damage, then check Attack Speed after total Weight. The sword infantry path does not need a mount. Address the current damage shortfall before allocating Battalions and Blessings.

Part 3: finish with swords or Bow Knight

Swordmaster can be the final class on the sword path. It requires level 45, Sword A, and the corresponding class unlock. If it is not available yet, use your existing advanced class. Astra only becomes available after mastery. If you recruited him late and have few level-ups left, first check whether he has gained enough Strength.

You can also train axes and bows early, move into Bow Knight later, then use The Eternal to add Strength. This path trains both axes and bows while preserving his Speed and making use of counterattacks after evading. Bow Knight requires level 45, Bow A, Riding D, and its corresponding unlock. Gaining Strength through The Eternal's Divine Might mastery adds the cost of a divine class qualification and mastery training. The main sword path does not need this detour.

He struggles with Axe proficiency, so training axes and bows together takes more work than focusing on swords. Prepare a mount and unlock Bow Knight before committing resources.

Evade on the flank to activate Flickering Edge

Place him on a flank where allies can cover him. Use evasion terrain, Speed, and a sword to engage physical enemies instead of sending him alone into a crowd. The upgraded level 35 ability grants Attack +5 during a combat in which he successfully evades. When he initiates combat, his first hit does not get this bonus before he has evaded an attack.

The Defense +3 after Swap can help him trade places with an injured ally and get them out. Defense and Avoid provide different protections, though. Keep checking the combat forecast against accurate enemies, magic, or repeated focused attacks. High Speed does not guarantee an evasion.

Recruitment details

For long-term training, prioritize completing his three-stage request chain early on Dietrich's route. That route requires Renown 6 and support 3 with the protagonist; other routes have different requirements. The quest chain takes time. See Jester recruitment for the full steps.

Jester's requirements panel in Theodora's story: Support Lv3, Renown Lv9, and extremely high negotiation difficulty. These differ from the Dietrich route requirements recommended in the main text.

Swap does not protect against magic

  • If he can follow up but deals little damage, build Strength. First check whether two hits can secure a kill.
  • Flickering Edge requires a successful evasion first. Its Attack bonus lasts only for that combat.
  • Choose swords or Bow Knight first. Training time is limited after a late recruitment. Do not start Sword, Axe, Bow, and Riding all at once.
  • Defense after Swap does not stop magic. Calculate magical damage and concentrated attacks separately.
