Dadao’s heavy-axe training and tanking choices

Dadao benefits from Strength, HP, and Defense, following Gladiator → Brigand → Warrior → Battlemaster for heavy-axe damage, with The Eternal as a final option. One Chance adds Attack only when neither combatant can follow up, making enemy selection more important than chasing Speed alone. In Cai’s story, he can instead become a Dragoon and use a Wild Bau to improve Strength and Dexterity.

Heavy axes turn Strength growth into damage

Dadao’s personal growths of Strength 55%, HP 50%, and Defense 45% suit a direct exchange of blows. The main route keeps training his Axe strength, with Battlemaster adding Strength growth +25 to further improve single-hit heavy-axe damage. When neither side can follow up, One Chance grants Attack +5. Heavy weapons and slow opponents make this situation easier to create.

StageRecommended class and levelClass benefits and mastery
BeginnerGladiator, recommended level 5, Renown 1Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet D; master Attack Basics
SpecialtyBrigand, recommended level 20, Renown 4Sword or Axe C; Axe Hit +3, Combat Arts +1; master Regroup
AdvancedWarrior, recommended level 35, Renown 8Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet B; Axe Hit and Brawl Hit +5, Combat Arts +2; master Practiced Art
MasterBattlemaster, recommended level 45Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet A; Axe Hit and Brawl Hit +7, Combat Arts +3; master War Master's Strike
DivineThe EternalSword, Axe, or Gauntlet S; Axe Hit and Brawl Hit +10; master Divine Might

This route continues Strength training for single-hit damage. Warrior mastery Practiced Art improves Combat Art Hit, while Battlemaster mastery War Master’s Strike supplies a powerful single hit that fits the axe approach. Keep using axes in Divine to continue the same proficiency rather than training every weapon for the final class.

Wild Bau improves both Strength and Dexterity

Animal capture unlocks from Chapter 5 of Cai’s story, and he can switch to Dragoon at the Advanced stage. At bond level 5, a Wild Bau grants Strength and Dexterity +2 each, with +10 percentage points to each growth. Strength directly improves axe damage, while Dexterity covers accuracy. Dragoon also unlocks in Cai’s story and preserves his axe focus.

At maximum bond, animals provide a total growth bonus of 25 percentage points. Wild and rare individuals of the same species have equal total growth bonuses. If a rare is unavailable, build bond with a wild one first rather than postponing the mounted route.

Check Strength, HP, Defense, and Dexterity around level 40

Near the end of Part 1, around level 40, ideal growth puts Strength, HP, Defense, and Dexterity above expected values. Strength determines axe and War Master’s Strike damage. HP and Defense sustain direct exchanges, while Dexterity helps inaccurate axes connect. Speed has 30% personal growth. Meeting expectations is enough; do not force Dadao into being the team’s fastest unit.

Magic and Charm do not carry this heavy-axe role, and Luck is not a priority for improvement. Resistance growth is only 20%; if it falls short, avoid mages. High physical durability does not mean he should handle every enemy. If Strength grows poorly, train another record in a different story and use Merge Causality to take each stat’s higher value.

Personal growth rate50%55%20%30%35%45%20%25%30%

His overall rating is C. High Strength delivers weighty hits, with Axe and Heavy Armor as strengths. However, low Speed leaves him vulnerable to faster enemies’ follow-ups. Resistance and Luck are low, while Spear and both magic types are weaknesses. These shortcomings become clearer in late Part 1 against enemies he cannot one-shot. Check One Chance’s “neither side follows up” condition carefully: if the enemy can follow up, its Attack +5 does not apply.

After meeting the route’s conditions, negotiate and hand over two Kothar Gar to recruit him. Explore Lake Kothar south of Dagsion for them. Fish appearances are random; keep exploring if none appear.

Food and books offer several gift options

He likes women, especially Anatolia, as well as machinery, good food, and fighting. His favorites include poetry and strategy books as well as food.

In Pale Raven conversations, choose Stare when he boasts about his looks and asks whether you are interested in him. Choose Spread Wings when he invites you into the Dadao Gang, and also when he says his parents have died but he is strong enough not to be lonely.

Damage multipliers are not guaranteed damage

Full Strength+ has a “Strength /2” percent chance when attacking to multiply damage by 1.5. Raising Strength improves both base damage and activation chance. Heavy Break+ instead requires armored status and has a “Defense /2” percent chance to double attack damage. Both are random effects. Do not multiply an entire battle’s damage by these values when planning a reliable kill.

Combat Arts have different trade-offs:

Combat ArtDurability costMight / Hit modifiers and use
Chop4Might +8, Hit −30; higher power costs accuracy
Tiger Slash3Might +3, effective against cavalry
Spike2Might +4, Hit +10; prioritizes accuracy
Wild Abandon4Might +8, Hit −30
Crash6Might +9; 5% chance to confuse on hit; cannot follow up
Mighty Fist2Might +4, Hit +10
Shove0Infantry pushes an adjacent ally one space away; unusable by large units
DefStance0Infantry Defense +3, Avoid −10 until the next player phase

Offensive Combat Arts all have Range 1. Shove targets an adjacent ally, while Defense Stance affects the user. Reach each required proficiency and choose a class that permits the weapons before equipping the arts.

His Support conversation partners are Eshmel, Peter, Esmeralda, Buccar, Nezha, Seteth, and Inyoni.

Fix accuracy and use armored single hits

Improve Dadao’s Hit first, then use Armored Knight and Dreadnought for high-Strength single hits. One Chance requires neither side to be able to follow up.

Being slow alone does not activate One Chance. Deploy him when his armor can take hits and his accuracy is sufficient, without waiting for a chance-based multiplier to rescue the fight.

Training route by stage

Part 1: Recruit early and improve Hit

Later recruitment can mean a higher joining level, with an example around level 17. Prepare Axe C and Heavy Armor E+, then take Armored Knight at level 20 and Renown 4. His low Dexterity makes a Hit ring more useful than more Attack. Heavy Armor C teaches Heavy Break; check class restrictions before equipping it.

If Hit still falls short, borrow Archer mastery. Train Bow C, enter Archer at level 20 and Renown 4, get Crescendo, then return to armor. This requires another discipline and class experience, so skip it if accuracy is sufficient. Stacks start at zero each map. Use accurate weapons and allies’ chip damage to secure kills before building the full +30 Hit.

The in-game One Chance description: Attack increases by 5 only when neither Dadao nor the enemy can follow up.
The in-game One Chance description: Attack increases by 5 only when neither Dadao nor the enemy can follow up.

Cai’s route also offers Charioteer. Train Bow C and Riding D early, take Charioteer at level 20 and Renown 4, and carry a Mini Bow for range 1–2. Use single hits or multitarget damage bonuses. Check charge, Shove, and Smash separately rather than treating every action as eligible for One Chance.

Part 2: Adjust weapons around both sides’ follow-ups

Continue the armored path into Dreadnought at level 35 and Renown 8, with either Axe B or Spear B plus Heavy Armor D. Its Focused Counter mastery grants Hit +10 when attacking second; Armored Knight mastery Great Counter grants Attack +3 when attacking second. Equip them after learning them. Mastery takes separate class experience. Survive physical attacks first, then counter with high Strength.

Check both sides of the forecast. If you cannot follow up but the enemy can, One Chance does not apply. Use different weapon weights to tune Attack Speed toward neither side following up. There is no need to deliberately become slower and easier to double. An enemy unable to counter because of range should not automatically count as unable to follow up.

Alternative when the team lacks bows: Hunter → Archer → Sniper, focusing Bow to B and taking Sniper at level 35 and Renown 8. Use Longbow and ranged arts for high-Strength single hits. Separate ordinary Range from Combat Art extensions; this is not unconditional range-3 normal attacking. Take this path for an archer gap, without requiring Brigand first.

Part 3: Finish the existing path

Castle Knight is an armored endpoint. At level 45, either Axe A or Spear A, Heavy Armor C, and after clearing segment 1, switch to Castle Knight. Mastery Intercept improves durability further. Continue the armored path or choose another endpoint for team needs. War Elephant requires additional Riding and mount investment.

Alternative for high-Strength damage: Brigand → Warrior. At level 35, take Warrior with any of Sword, Axe, or Gauntlet B for Practiced Art. At level 45, any of those at A, and after clearing segment 1, enter Battlemaster for single-hit Combat Arts. This trades some durability for damage; innate armored-class abilities disappear when switching.

For continued chariot use, check Combat Art Hit first. Multihit bow arts carry heavy accuracy penalties. Compare the forecast before deciding whether Mars's Blessing should fix Hit.

Equipment and support: Armored builds still prioritize accurate weapons and a Hit ring. On Theodora’s route, Bonaventure can assist. The main infantry path needs no mount. Mars improves accuracy for the multihit Combat Arts above; choose other options for other roles.

Dadao’s Heavy Break description: armored classes only; when attacking, it has a Defense /2 activation chance to deal 1.5× damage.

Hold chokepoints in armor or fire single bow shots

The armored path holds chokepoints against physical enemies, first removing mages and enemies whose follow-ups would defeat him. The bow path fires single shots behind allies; the chariot path chooses targets within its action range.

Check these before a single hit
  1. 1
    Check Hit first.
  2. 2
    Check both sides’ follow-ups.
  3. 3
    Estimate damage without chance-based multipliers.
Treat criticals and multiplier activations as extra. A proc on the last attack does not guarantee the next one.

Recruitment

Theodora and Leda require Renown 5, Bond 2 with the current protagonist, and two Kothar Gar. Other routes have higher thresholds. See Dadao's recruitment requirements for availability and fish acquisition. Prepare the fish as well as Renown.

Dadao’s recruitment window on Dietrich’s route lists Support Lv3, Renown Lv10, and negotiation. These thresholds do not carry over to Theodora’s or Leda’s routes.

Lower Speed does not necessarily activate One Chance

  • Adding One Chance's +5 Attack merely because Dadao cannot follow up.
  • Lowering Speed deliberately until the enemy doubles, losing both the bonus and survival.
  • Combining inability to counter, inability to follow up, multihit arts, and chariot actions into one rule.
  • Continuing to miss with powerful axes without budgeting for an Accuracy Ring or bow mastery.
  • Treating a chance-based multiplier as fixed damage or one save's stats as guaranteed growth.
